House of Filigree
✩✩✩✩
In the center of Porto, on Rua do Almada, make sure to visit House of Filigree — a space that brings together a museum, a jewelry workshop, and a boutique.
It was opened in 2019 by siblings Pedro and Luísa Rosas, representatives of the fifth generation of a family devoted to filigree jewelry. Their great-grandfathers founded two of Portugal’s most renowned filigree workshops, and today the new generation continues the craft, preserving the traditions of handmade jewelry.
Filigree is a technique in which delicate threads of gold and silver are twisted and soldered to form intricate ornaments and jewelry. Most of the artisans who collaborate with House of Filigree live in northern Portugal — in Gondomar and Póvoa de Lanhoso, where this craftsmanship is passed down through generations. Their creations can be seen and purchased right here, at House of Filigree.
On the ground floor you’ll find a small museum displaying 19th- and 20th-century jewelry, original tools, and archival photographs. Upstairs is the workshop, where goldsmiths handcraft new pieces every day. The space also offers short workshops (by appointment) for those who want to try this traditional art themselves.
In Porto, as in much of Portugal, you’ll see many factory-made imitations “in filigree style.” But if you want to discover genuine Portuguese filigree — handmade, precise, and full of history — come to House of Filigree.
