ARIU
✩✩✩-✩✩✩✩
When ancient Ecuadorian symbols and the natural world of the Galápagos are embodied in contemporary design — you get ARIU jewelry.
The story of this family brand began in 1975, when Pedro Ushiña opened a small jewelry workshop outside Quito. In 1990, his son Byron joined the business, and in 1994, Byron's young wife Alexandra Aguirre.
In 1997, Byron and Alexandra launched their first collection: medallions featuring pre-Columbian symbols. That's how their famous "charms" were born — amulet jewellery where ancient motifs met contemporary design.
In 2008, Byron and Alexandra opened the first ARIU Gallery in Quito's historic centre. In 2016, a shop at Swissôtel Quito. In 2023, another at JW Marriott Quito hotel.
Today, Byron Ushiña is the lead designer and creative founder, Alexandra Aguirre is co-founder and creative director. Their three children also work in the company: Mishell Ushiña Aguirre is administrative director, Amy Ushiña Aguirre is finance manager, Dylan Ushiña Aguirre is creative designer. All three knew from childhood that one day they would continue the family business.
ARIU's jewellery collections are still largely inspired by Ecuador: the nature of the Galápagos Islands, the symbols of pre-Columbian America. In addition, Byron has a separate brand, Ushiña Jewelry — an experimental jewellery line with a mystical abstract style.
ARIU has four locations in Quito. The main one is at Swissôtel Quito, in the modern La Floresta neighbourhood, near La Carolina Park and the World Trade Center. Another is at JW Marriott Quito hotel in the north of the city. The third is in the historic centre at Plaza de San Francisco. The fourth is at Mariscal Sucre Airport.
Whether you buy a silver hummingbird pendant for $30 or a luxurious belt buckle depicting an Andean serpent in silver and gold with blue topaz for $2,600 — this tangible memory of Ecuador will stay with you forever.
