Portuguese Filigree: The Story Behind the Craft & 2 Shops in Lisbon and Porto

The story of Portuguese filigree and two places to experience it today — Joalharia do Carmo in Lisbon and House of Filigree in Porto.

Filigree is one of Portugal’s most distinctive jewelry traditions. The word filigree comes from the Latin filum granum, meaning “thread of grains.” It describes a craft technique of shaping the finest gold or silver wires, twisting and weaving them by hand to form intricate geometric patterns. The result is astonishingly delicate, mesmerizing in its precision and complexity.

Portuguese Filigree: from northern workshops to the showcases of Lisbon and Porto

Filigree has been known for centuries — archaeologists have found such ornaments in ancient Phoenicia, Greece, and India. It reached Europe through the Mediterranean, and arrived in Portugal in the 15th century, when the country traded actively with the East and Africa.

Portuguese artisans quickly made it part of their own jewelry heritage, adding local forms — hearts, crosses, birds, and marine motifs. The most iconic one is the Heart of Viana (Coração de Viana), which first appeared in the 18th century in the city of Viana do Castelo. Originally a religious symbol — the Sacred Heart of Jesus — it later became a sign of love and family memory.

Today, the heart of filigree production still beats in northern Portugal — in Gondomar and Póvoa de Lanhoso. Here, filigree jewelry is still made by hand in small, often family-run workshops, where the craft is passed down through generations. In 2023, Gondomar’s filigree was officially recognized as part of Portugal’s Intangible Cultural Heritage.

You can find genuine handmade filigree jewelry in Lisbon and Porto, though not everywhere. The key is knowing where to go — and avoiding factory-made “filigree-style” souvenirs.

Joalharia do Carmo, Lisbon

Opened in 1924, Joalharia do Carmo still operates on Rua do Carmo, right in the center of Lisbon. Its Art Deco façade was designed by architect Manuel Norte Júnior, and for preserving its original interior the shop was officially recognized as a Loja com História — a “historic shop of Lisbon.”

Here, everything on display carries the Certified Filigree mark, confirming authentic origin. All pieces are made by artisans from the northern towns of Gondomar and Póvoa de Lanhoso. The showcases feature earrings, pendants, crosses, miniature boats, and of course the traditional Viana hearts. Each piece comes with an authenticity card that names its maker and place of origin.

Joalharia do Carmo is a rare example of a century-old jewelry shop that has kept both its atmosphere and the level of craftsmanship that defined it.

House of Filigree, Porto

In Porto, filigree has long been part of local life, and in 2019 the city gained a place dedicated entirely to it. House of Filigree, on Rua do Almada, combines a museum, a working atelier, and a boutique. It’s a family project founded by siblings Pedro and Luísa Rosas, descendants of two of Portugal’s most respected filigree workshops. The new generation continues the craft with a focus on preserving handmade production.

On the ground floor you’ll find a small museum showing jewelry from the 19th and 20th centuries, original tools, and archival photos. Upstairs is the workshop, where jewelers create new pieces by hand, using the same techniques as their predecessors. Short workshops (by appointment) let visitors try making a filigree element themselves.

House of Filigree works with artisans from Gondomar and Póvoa de Lanhoso, and in its boutique you can buy their creations — unique, certified pieces with traceable origins.

Why go there

Filigree is not a museum relic or a “folk souvenir,” but an essential part of Portugal’s jewelry culture — a craft still practiced every day.

At Joalharia do Carmo, you can see how the art evolved over a century, from religious pendants to contemporary designs.

At House of Filigree, you can watch how it’s made — with the same tools and the same precision as generations ago.

If you want to understand the difference between genuine Portuguese filigree and mass-produced imitations, start with these two addresses.
