Jewelry in Paris: beyond Place Vendôme
In 1893, the first jewelry boutique, Boucheron, opened on Place Vendôme in Paris. Soon after came Cartier, Van Cleef & Arpels, Chaumet and others. Very quickly, the square itself became a symbol of luxury shopping and jewelry in Paris.
But today, Cartier’s iconic nail bracelet or Van Cleef & Arpels’ four-leaf clover can be found in almost any world capital. The real discoveries await those looking for independent jewelry boutiques in Paris — beyond Place Vendôme and the usual fashion clichés.
Here are three names worth adding to your Paris shopping route.
Charlotte Chesnais — minimalist jewelry
Charlotte Chesnais , a former Balenciaga designer known as the “queen of curved lines,” creates rings, bracelets and earrings whose soft contours wrap around wrists and ears as if in dialogue with the body.
In Paris, Charlotte Chesnais has two boutiques:
:
- 169 Boulevard Saint-Germain
- 10 Rue d’Alger (next to the Tuileries Garden)
Both spaces, designed by architect Anne Holtrop, are themselves worth a visit as examples of contemporary architectural design in Paris.
La Lueur de l’Aube — jewelry with natural motifs
Just around the corner from Charlotte Chesnais’ boutique on Boulevard Saint-Germain begins Rue du Cherche-Midi, where you’ll find La Lueur de l’Aube, founded by Japanese designer Makiko Akiyama.
Her rings, earrings, necklaces and bracelets share the same refined restraint as Charlotte Chesnais’ creations, but with a completely different source of inspiration: not cold geometry, but the warm breath of nature. If Charlotte’s minimalism feels provocative, Makiko’s pieces seem sunlit, radiating harmony, serenity and comfort.
Address: 77 Rue du Cherche-Midi, Paris
Mara Paris — creative jewelry design
Our third stop is Mara Paris on Rue Chapon, near the Centre Pompidou. The brand was founded by Ayça Özbank Taskan, a French-Turkish architect and designer.
Her jewelry is bold, creative and sculptural; it has been worn by Christina Aguilera, Lady Gaga, Katy Perry, Heidi Klum, Shania Twain, Halle Berry, Eva Longoria, Sydney Sweeney… and not least, it has appeared at least fifteen times on the heroines of the series Emily in Paris — proof of the brand’s authentic bond with the city it calls home.
Address: 29 rue Chapon, Paris
Centuries pass, yet Paris still holds the title of capital of jewelry art. But the brightest discoveries now lie not on Place Vendôme, but beyond it — where independent designer boutiques turn jewelry shopping into a new experience: contemporary, vibrant and unmistakably Parisian.
