Joalharia do Carmo
✩✩✩-✩✩✩✩
In the very heart of Lisbon, next to the Santa Justa Lift, there is a jewelry shop where time seems to have stopped. Behind its Art Deco façade, designed by architect Manuel Norte Júnior, lies a quiet room with wooden showcases and mirrors, where under the glow of crystal chandeliers glisten jewels made from delicate gold and silver threads.
Opened in 1924, Joalharia do Carmo is one of Lisbon’s officially recognized “Loja com História” — historic shops distinguished for preserving their original interiors and identity. For more than a century, it has sold handmade jewelry created by filigree masters from northern Portugal, especially from Gondomar and Póvoa de Lanhoso. Each piece bears a hallmark of authenticity and a Certified Filigree passport — a guarantee that what you hold is not a replica, but genuine Portuguese filigree.
This technique is one of the oldest in the art of jewelry-making. From the thinnest threads of gold and silver, artisans craft intricate patterns and figures — crosses, flowers, leaves, and the traditional Viana Hearts, a northern Portuguese symbol of love, faith, and devotion. Once inspired by the Sacred Heart of Jesus, it later became a token of affection and a proud emblem of Portugal’s filigree heritage.
At Joalharia do Carmo, you’ll find the work of leading Portuguese filigree artisans. And perhaps here, among these luminous golden threads, you’ll discover a pattern that will remind you of Portugal for many years to come.
By the way, besides its flagship historic store on Rua do Carmo, Joalharia do Carmo also has boutiques in central Lisbon on Rua de São Nicolau and Rua da Prata, near the Belém Tower, as well as in Porto and in the Azores.
