In the mountains of Serra da Estrela, where cold winds and shepherds’ flocks have shaped local life for centuries, Burel Factory was born — a brand that brought traditional wool production back to life. It all began when the owners of nearby mountain hotels discovered the semi-abandoned Lanifícios Império factory in Manteigas. To prevent it from disappearing, they bought it, along with its 19th-century looms, and found artisans who still knew how to work with wool. That was the beginning of a new production line that became the heart of the modern Burel Factory brand.

The main material is burel, a dense wool fabric once used for mountain cloaks and blankets. Today it is transformed into warm yet lightweight blankets, decorative panels, bags, coats and even pieces of furniture. Every item carries the maker’s touch — everything here is still woven, dyed and sewn by hand.

Burel Factory has grown from a small regional craft into a modern brand. In Lisbon, it has several locations: Burel Chiado on Rua Serpa Pinto — a shop focused on fashion and accessories and Burel Chiado Home, offering wool blankets, rugs and handcrafted furniture. In Porto, the spacious Burel Porto showroom on Rua Mouzinho da Silveira showcases the brand’s collections, while in Manteigas, visitors can explore the original factory itself.
