Omar Hernandez
✩✩✩-✩✩✩✩
The gallery of Omar Hernandez is one of those places in Oaxaca you really should not skip. Omar is known for his distinctive ceramics and artworks inspired by pre-Columbian cultures of the Americas and familiar Mexican symbols: corn, agave, mezcal.
He has been experimenting with clay since childhood, playing with form, texture, and color. His signature lies in natural materials and pigments: red cochineal, plant-based indigo, and even raw earth in different shades.
A special place in his applied work is taken by ceremonial skulls inspired by Aztec, Toltec, and Maya traditions, as well as jícaras, traditional cups used for drinking mezcal.
If you want to bring something truly authentic home from Mexico, something connected to skull imagery and tequila culture, skip the souvenir shops. Come here instead, to Omar Hernandez’s gallery right in the heart of colorful, vibrant Oaxaca.
