il-lokal
✩✩-✩✩✩
il-lokal, set inside the historic il-Mahzen building in the heart of Mdina, is a space that blends a gallery, a shop and an exhibition of contemporary Maltese design.
Here you’ll find pieces that show Malta through the eyes of its own designers: ceramics, jewelry, posters, art books, interior objects and accessories. Everything is created by small local studios and independent makers.
The project was founded by Karolina Rostkowska, a designer from Poland who moved to Malta in 2017 “for a while” and ended up staying for good. Karolina noticed that many local artists and craftspeople lacked a place where they could present and sell their work directly, without intermediaries. That’s how il-lokal began — first as an Instagram page, then as a full shop and community. Today il-lokal brings together over 70 Maltese creators and hosts small presentations, pop-ups and collaborations between designers.
Among the many curious pieces you’ll find lighting by Sforma Studio inspired by the lines of the Maltese coastline; playful wall sculptures shaped like local pastizzi by artist Kane Calì; interior objects made from concrete, terrazzo and ceramics — wall clocks, planters, stands and candleholders — from Form Matters; and silver jewelry — earrings, rings and brooches shaped as small sculptures — from the jewelry brand QUE.
If you’re into contemporary design and want to bring home something truly unique instead of a generic souvenir, il-lokal in Mdina is the place to go.
