Birgu Candlelight Company

Birgu Candlelight Company is a small studio and shop in the old town of Birgu, one of the three historic cities where Malta’s story began. In 2021, Mags and Nigel, a couple who moved here from the UK, opened their candle workshop beneath the arches of St Lawrence Church, overlooking the harbour of Birgu.

In a city where even the annual festival of light is dedicated to candles, the idea of creating their own workshop came almost naturally. Mags and Nigel chose to focus on craftsmanship and sustainable materials: every candle here is hand-poured from a blend of coconut and rapeseed wax, free from paraffin and palm oil.

The collection includes scented candles in glass, reed diffusers and essential oils. Visitors can meet the founders, learn about the process, and choose a scent to take home — one that will bring back memories of Malta long after the trip.

The name of the brand is tied to the city’s main event — the Birgu by Candlelight (Birgufest). Once a year, on the second Saturday of October, the lights in old Birgu are turned off, and the city glows with thousands of candles.

On the rest of the days, that same light lives here — in the clear glass jars neatly lined up on the shelves of Birgu Candlelight Company.
